Kempower DC fast charging technology deployed at Z Energy site.

Kempower and ECL Group have delivered their first EV charging installation in New Zealand, located at Z Energy’s Cambridge site.

The three-bay charging hub features a Kempower Power Unit with one single and one dual-plug Kempower Satellites, capable of offering a maximum deliverable DC charging capacity of 120kW per plug, currently operating at 100kW.

ECL Group provided design services for the forecourt, led the installation of the Kempower chargers and will be responsible for ongoing maintenance and support at the site.

Z is proud to work with Kempower and ECL to bring fast, innovative charging infrastructure to Aotearoa New Zealand.  We continue to learn and adapt our infrastructure rollout to meet our site and customers charging needs, with valuable support and delivery from partners like ECL and Kempower.

Rapid EV charging technology provider Kempower and technical services company ECL Group have delivered their first EV charging installation in New Zealand. Located at a Z Energy fuel station in Hautapu, Cambridge. The facility has increased rapid DC charging infrastructure availability for local drivers and will encourage EV adoption in the region.

Transportation currently accounts for 18% of New Zealand’s CO2 emissions, with the country prioritizing e-mobility as a way of decarbonizing. In 2021, the government set a target of offering a public charging station every 75km along state highways, while there were 680 public chargers available in the country as of last year. New Zealand’s forthcoming National EV Charging Strategy will likely create new targets for the roll-out of public EV charging infrastructure.

Kempower and ECL Group have partnered to provide infrastructure-grade rapid DC charging technology across New Zealand. The Cambridge site features a Kempower Power Unit with two Kempower Satellites, capable of offering a maximum deliverable charging capacity of 120kW per plug. Kempower ChargEye, a cloud-based charging management system, is also available, offering an enhanced charging experience for drivers and assisting Z in delivering safe and secure operations at the four-bay charging hub.

ECL Group has worked with Z for over a decade and specifically supported the company’s e-mobility business for around a year. It provided design services for deploying Kempower’s technology at the Cambridge fuel station and led the installation of the chargers. ECL Group will be responsible for ongoing maintenance and support at the site.

“We’re thrilled to officially enter the New Zealand market and offer our rapid EV charging technology to the country’s EV drivers, thanks to ECL Group’s installation at Z’s Cambridge fuel station. Any installation of EV chargers on a fuel station forecourt is challenging, as the sites are typically busy and feature complex infrastructure. The modularity of our technology helped overcome this challenge by offering four charging bays in a space-constrained site”, said Kempower’s Chief Sales Officer, Tommi Liuska.

We believe charging your EV should be as reliable as fuel. Which is why we’re delighted to partner with Kempower to deploy Infrastructure-grade EV charging stations. Keeping New Zealand’s communities moving towards a more sustainable future requires reliable, rapid DC charge points that will stand the test of time. And future-focused partnerships like this to accelerate the pace of change.
